School to cook up a storm in kitchen
By Sue Wallace

• Chef Stephanie Alexander with students in the Collingwood kitchen.WANGARATTA’s Yarrunga Primary School will be the first regional school to be involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

The Stephanie Alexander Foundation has secured funding from the Sidney Myer Fund to support the program at the Wangaratta school.

A well-known chef and food author, Ms Alexander is passionate about teaching children how to grow and use fresh food from gardens, cooking and making healthy food choices.

She has devoted the past five years to formulating the program and overseeing the best-practice model established in July, 2001, at Collingwood College in Melbourne.

“It is going to be a fantastic opportunity for Wangaratta children to learn about growing and harvesting fresh produce from their own garden,” she said.

“They then prepare delicious meals and share them with their peers, all the while learning about healthy choices and having fun.

“We hope to develop strong relationships with Wangaratta producers and suppliers. There is a unique opportunity to do this in a regional setting.”

The Yarrunga Primary School program will involve children in grades 3 to 6 spending an hour each week in the garden learning about soil, planting, propagating and harvesting.

Ms Alexander said the students would help establish the garden and create a kitchen classroom.

“We hope the work and associated costs will be supported by parents, the local community and some corporate sponsors,” she said.

“For example, irrigation firm Netafim has already promised to install drip irrigation in the new garden and Fisher and Paykel will provide the kitchen appliances.

“Once the garden is producing, each child will spend 1.5 hours every week in the kitchen preparing dishes using the produce from the garden.”

Stephanie Alexander will address a community meeting about the Kitchen Garden Program on Wednesday August 2, at 6pm at the school.
